Following up my video blog on Brain Health with more information from Dr Blaylock, M.D. and others regarding their extensive research on excitotoxins. To summarize:
Excitotoxins are food additives that stimulate the cells of the brain to death. The good news is the blood brain barrier, which is the guardian of the brain (keeping most toxins out), will protect the brain from occasional instances of excitotoxins. When there is a repeated assault of excitotoxins (too much at once or too often), these offenders will get past the barrier and excite cells of the brain to death.
Found in processed food, fast food, chips, soda, soups, packaged items and even baby food. These are the substances referred to as Excitotoxins:
Aspartame: Otherwise known as ‘Nutrasweet’. Aspartame is an aspartate. Additionally aspartate and L-cysteine are two powerful excitotoxins that are frequently added to food. According to FDA rules they require no labeling at all.
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein: contains 3 powerful brain toxins and several known carcinogens. Note: The FDA does not regulate the amount of carcinogens allowed in hydrolyzed vegetable protein or the amount of hydrolyzed vegetable protein that can be added to food products. Dr Blaylock believes this to be an even greater health threat than MSG
MSG: short for Monosodium Glutamate

In short, the food industry is tricking our taste buds into craving foods based on the power of these flavor enhancers. You aren’t weak when you reach for those chips, a diet soda or crave another fast food burger. They are designed to create addictive behavior, getting you to come back for more. And processed food such as soups, canned goods, packaged and frozen foods, may make our lives easier but they come with a price- our health. The answer: going back to basics and cooking ‘from scratch’. Fresh ingredients flavored with real spices and herbs. Buying a few things to stock your cupboards from reliable sources, with labels that clearly state ‘no msg’. I have seen labels that say “no added msg” trying to disguise the fact that it contains naturally occurring msg in the form of hydrolyzed protein- so beware!
Holistic practitioners and many medical Doctors are in agreement on the topic of Alzheimer’s; it can be prevented and cured, but not by medical means- you must take control of your diet and use holistic remedies to regain your health. In short, everyone should avoid excitotoxins, but those with a family history of Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons, or ALS should take label reading very seriously. Even headaches and migraines can be symptoms of excitotoxin toxicity. When I had my wellness practice, if a new client came in complaining of headaches, my first question was always “Do you drink Diet Soda?” 9.5 times out of 10 the answer was “yes”. MSG is also a known trigger for migraines. Studies have shown only 4-5 grams of MSG per meal can produce a migraine- either immediately or delayed2.
The next step is to check the labels of items in your cupboard. It’s never too late to begin healthy habits, today is a great day to kick excitotoxins to the curb.
